  灵璧奇石“五岳钟灵”,因为苏东坡品鉴而号称天下第一奇石。 在灵璧县衙前举办的赛石大会上,民女张钟灵突然现身,因为奇石“五岳钟灵”的归属,状告当乡富豪王百石。王百石极力争辩,似乎也能自圆其说。结果,知县认定张钟灵属于无赖讹诈,意欲责罚。这被乔装富商暗访的乾隆看在了眼里,乾隆指使美妃出面,保下民女张钟灵。 张钟灵非常机智,给冒充富商的乾隆提供了一些有力证据,证明父亲确属王百石害死,“五岳钟灵”确属他们张家所有。并对假扮富商的乾隆承诺,若能为父申冤而自己愿以身相许。乾隆通过明察暗访,认定张钟灵所言属实。在铁证如山的情况下,支持张钟灵二次上告。 知县沈布休二审奇石。张钟灵证据确凿,有理有据。不料,王百石准备更加充分,他当众陈述,振振有词,有理有据。理由更加充足,证据更加坚实。知县只好声明要惩罚张钟灵。知县已经掌握了所有证据,占有了所有优势,果然,致使在场所有倾向张钟灵的人都失望了。 因为知县步步为营,已把案子做成了铁案死案。乾隆万般无奈,乾隆为了解救张钟灵,同时平息民愤,只好派太监得儿带大内侍卫进一步探查证人、证据,乾隆自信他沈布休审案,不可能万无一失。 乾隆三审奇石。张钟灵得知富商就是当朝圣上,更是闯衙告御状。张钟灵进一步展示新的真凭实据,致使王百石无言以对。眼看着张钟灵稳操胜券。不料,知县挺身而出,当面坦然承认,此案与王百石等人无有干系,上下里外,都是自己一人策划并催促实施。愿意被杀头,但是,要说出真正的原因。乾隆答应。于是知县细说缘由:原来,他是为了乾隆大清江山的安危考虑,不得不尔。他申述的理由,居然说服了乾隆。 然而,张钟灵据理力争,并不认同这一“道理”。张钟灵突然亮出来自己的杀手锏,却发现乾隆上当,知县沈布休和王百石奉献给皇上的“五岳钟灵”奇石竟然是个赝品。那真正的“五岳钟灵”奇石又藏在哪里呢? 聪明圣上的发现了深藏在已经死去的张老员外内心的一个秘密。

The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family__APOS__s history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it__APOS__s the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family__APOS__s world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe__APOS__s clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.
