　　赌王雷天在赌术大赛中因对手“赌花”上官飞花（宫雪花 饰）出千而失利，心有不甘的雷天自杀身亡。雷天在警队中的好友华叔于公于私都有惩治上官飞花的理由，于是请犀牛皮（冯淬帆 饰）召集其他几位福星罗汉果（曾志伟 饰）、大山地（吴耀汉 饰）和花旗参（苗侨伟 饰）参加赌术特训，以期能够战胜上官飞花。雷天之女雷慧琳（冯秀燕 饰）及其替身也一同受训，鹧鸪菜（洪金宝 饰）因受伤不能参加委托少林僧人清补凉代替。众位福星在赌术老师（郑佩佩 饰）和千王（陈百祥 饰）的调教下进步神速。华叔见时机已到，派出众福星和雷慧琳内应外合盗出上官飞花财产，并通过新一届赌术大赛要上官飞花身败名裂……

　　剧情灵感来自戴维森的真实生活，包括他那在911事件中去世的消防员父亲。主角为二十多岁的男子Scott，他跟妈妈住一起，梦想是当纹身师，但每天除了吸麻和朋友鬼混、暗暗勾搭青梅竹马之外无所事事。而妈妈找的新男友却引发了一系列事件，迫使开始Scott正视自己的人生。

　　萨沙接获德国外部通知，未婚妻茱莉亚在潜水时遇溺身亡。正当萨沙悲痛欲绝之际，赫然在电视看到茱莉亚出现！一批伊拉克恐怖份子胁持数名欧洲人质，他认出其中一人就是茱莉亚，于是要求德国政府出手营救，但遭外交部一口拒绝。在无计可施之下，他唯有独力追查真相，他发现女友的身份疑点重重。再深入研究，发觉事件牵涉德国非法售卖核武技术给伊拉克，为了茱莉亚，他决定只身前往伊拉克，深入虎穴。

　　八十年代初，一个春天的早晨，陕西某地的杏花村生产队里，锣鼓喧天，鞭炮齐鸣，生产队长冯二强为新房的落成举行庆祝仪式。这时，冯二强的哥哥冯大强却在为儿子根田结婚没有住房而发愁。大强认为除了厚着脸皮向二强借房以外别无他法。妻子文英坚决反对。大强又急又气，最后还是不听妻子的劝阻到二强家借房去了。结果，房没借成，反遭弟媳玉琴一顿尖酸刻薄的辱骂，气得原来住在二强家的老母冯大娘也含着泪水随大强走了。当时的杏花村，因为生产队长冯二强拒不实行生产责任制，整个生产队还是在吃大锅饭，而且越吃越穷。得到只是少数__QUOTE__灵虫虫__QUOTE__。为此，原县委书记、曾在杏花村蹲过点的韩云亭特来找二强商议解决的方法。韩云亭是二强的大舅，知道家中因借房而引起了风波，批评了二强。最后，二强不得不同意将新房中的一小间借给了根田、杏花办喜事。婚后第二天，玉琴借故当众大闹了一场，辱骂了杏花。杏花一气之下，跑回了娘家桃岭村。由此，根田、文英都责怪大强，说不该去低三下四地借房。大强抱怨自己没本事，拖累了孩子和家人。杏花经过思考，返回杏花村。正好韩云亭来宣布杏花村实行生产责任制的决定。大家满怀希望，干劲倍增，但二强等人却不肯善罢甘休。正当大强和乡亲们喜庆丰收，吃开园瓜的时候，牛铃奉二强指令宣布__QUOTE__全部农作物收归集体拉平分配__QUOTE__，又引起一场__QUOTE__瓜田风波__QUOTE__。二强在风波中丢了队长的职务。群众推举文英当队长，文英挑起了这副担子。韩云亭又以自身的经历，做二强的思想工作，使二强的思想发生了转变。文英不计前嫌，诚恳帮助二强，使二强一家人认识了错误，决心痛改前非。冯大娘一家人团聚了，杏花村的面貌改变了，人们高声欢唱党的富民政策，大家沿着党指引的道路继续前进。

　　讲述1973年，少女贝丝离开南方乡村老家，前往纽约大学读书，她亲爱的叔叔弗兰克是位受人尊敬的文学教授，贝丝很快发现弗兰克是同性恋，和长期伴侣沃利住在一起，而这个秘密他隐瞒了多年。在弗兰克父亲/贝丝的祖父突然去世后，弗兰克不得不回家参加葬礼，并最终面对一个埋藏已久、他的整个成年生活都在逃避的创伤。

　　斯塔（萨莎·莱恩 Sasha Lane 饰）带着妹妹和酒鬼父亲过着相依为命的生活，姐妹两人靠着在垃圾堆里捡别人吃剩的食物过活，不仅如此，斯塔还承受着来自父亲的侵犯和猥亵，精神在压抑中渐渐趋向绝望。某日，斯塔在偶然之中认识了名为杰克（希亚·拉博夫 Shia LaBeouf 饰）的男子，杰克是一支杂志推销团队里的领头人物，在杰克的邀请下，斯塔最终下定决心登上了驶往自由的面包车，彻底离开了荒谬不堪的原生家庭。
　　就这样，斯塔成为了一名杂志推销员，由杰克负责指导。在此过程中，杰克和斯塔之间产生了炙热的感情，然而杰克一直以来和他们的顶头上司克里斯塔（莱莉·科奥 Riley Keough 饰）保持着肉体关系。这段注定见不得光的恋情让斯塔体味到了别样的辛酸和悸动。

　　一位老诗人在河畔酒店里住了一段时间，想起了他两个久未联系的儿子。一个被同居男人背叛的年轻女人，也入住了这家酒店。为了寻求支持，她请了一位朋友来陪她。在这个江边旅馆里，人们只是相互凝视，生活于每个人来说都很艰难，这样的日子似乎每天都在不知疲倦地反复。

The story appears simple on the surface, but is revealed, especially after multiple viewings, as more multi-layered and textured than Cassavetes at his best. Ostensibly it concerns a 14-year old Catholic girl, Wynne (Agutter) growing up in this post-modern wasteland, who develops a crush on her much older adoptive brother (Marshall)- a crush which perversely deepens and grows into infatuation once she starts to believe he is the local sex killer. This is in itself an idea that makes you sit up and jolt, but as the narrative develops, it continues not necessarily along a linear path but in several confusing and fascinating directions: the family__APOS__s history, (detailed effectively in chilling flashback during an improvised seance) is a chequered one, and has suffered at least one major relocation and upheaval in the last ten years. At the crux, however, it__APOS__s the depiction of socialal changes that make I Start Counting so fascinating and elevate its language far beyond the confines of the standard horror film. The major subtext- that teenage girls were maturing more quickly than before, and developing full sexual and romantic appetites (even if in thought rather than deed) but were not possessed of enough discretion to make the right choices- was a step forward for a genre in which its young females had previously been portrayed as bimbo victims (Cover Girl Killer and The Night Caller spring to mind), but not one that all viewers would necessarily agree with. But most striking of all, and possibly the most enduring image which the viewer will take away with them, is of the masterful symbolism with which director Greene invests every shot. Every inch of the Kinch family__APOS__s world- their house, their walls, their TV, Agutters underwear, bedroom furniture and toys, Sutcliffe__APOS__s clothes, Marshalls van, the local Catholic church, their town centre, their record shop) - is painted a bright, scintillating white- a white which, by inference, is slowly becoming smudged and corrupted with the dirt of the outside world. White also symbolises, of course, purity and innocence (two qualities Catholic schoolgirls are supposed to hold dear), and it is into this world of innocence that the ever-present red bus (a symbol of violation and penetration), conducted by the lecherous yet similarly juvenile Simon Ward, makes regular journeys. The allegory is further expanded in one scene where Agutter believes she sees the Christ figure in church weeping blood: by the time we acknowledge it, its gone, but the seed has already been planted. Rarely in a genre production has the use of colour and background been so important or effective in creating a uniformity of mood. I Start Counting is as near-perfect an end to a decade as one could hope for, and exactly the kind of film people should be making now- which is, of course, exactly why they never will.
